How do you know the right question to ask?

I hope and pray all is well with you and your family. Have you ever wondered how you know the right question to ask? I have, especially once again a couple of days ago.

My kids wanted to eat at the Habit Burger, so we were there in the Mission Viejo location. As my kids were enjoying their french fries and chicken bites, I saw a young guy walking into the store, and he looked a little bit lost. After a while, he approached the table we were sitting at and asked a question. His voice was very quiet, and I had to ask him to repeat the question 2 or 3 times. I still couldn’t hear what he was asking, so I stood up to get closer to him. He asked, “I’m so hungry. Would you buy me something to eat?” I took him to the counter and let him order a meal for him to enjoy.

On my way home, I thought about how he knew the right question to ask. If he had asked me if I could give him a dollar, I wouldn’t have given him anything. One, I didn’t have any cash on me, and two, even if I had it, I wouldn’t have wanted him to spend it on buying weeds or anything like that. He asked for food to eat because he was hungry, and I didn’t hesitate to spend $11 to buy food for him. He didn’t even say thank you, but it didn’t bother me because I was just glad to know that he enjoyed his dinner that day.

He knew the right question to ask, and because of that, he received what he asked. Now I’m asking if I know the right question to ask.

God always answers when we ask, even when we feel like he isn’t answering. But did you know his answer isn’t always “yes”? That’s why sometimes we feel like he isn’t answering the question we ask. We must remember that his answer can be yes, no, or not yet.

When I think about my meeting with the guy at the Habit Burger that I didn’t even get a chance to ask, knowing the right question to ask matters. If we are to ask the right question to God, I think we will get his “yes” always.

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” Matthew 7:7-8

What’s the secret to asking the right questions? One might ask. I believe the secret is to know who God is and to experience what he is doing in and through our lives. When we do that, we will be able to ask questions that reflect who he is and what he is doing. He is our good good Father.

Do I always know the right questions to ask? I wish I could say “yes,” but that won’t be an honest answer. I too often ask the wrong questions or don’t even know what to ask.

Nonetheless, there is one thing that I never want to miss, and that is for me to say “yes” to God. God’s plans for my life are more and better, and I never want to say “no” to God.

“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” Jeremiah 29:11

Even when I don’t understand what he says, his plans, and his timing, I will say “yes” to him no matter what because he loves me so much that he gave his one and only Son. I hope this becomes a reminder for you and me every day.
